Thornwood is a magnificent exclusively designed luxury 4 star Lodge ideally located in the private Kuleni Game Park offering a unique experience. A unique blend of luxury timber frame units, fit seamlessly into the indigenous bush with an abundance of bird life and game. This luxurious villa offers guests absolute privacy with a large living area, a private pool, private waterhole and a fully equipped kitchen, which opens up onto a large deck with a fire-pit. The secluded lodge-style villa features four bedrooms. Two bedrooms are stand alone cottages while the other two bedrooms are connected to the main house. All are en-suite and are fitted with air conditioning, ceiling fans and an additional feature of an outdoor shower. Relax in spacious comfort without losing intimacy with nature. Predominantly self-catering, Thornwood can also cater for B&B or Dinner B&B bookings on special request. Kuleni Game Park itself features 200 hectares of pristine natural bush and is home to four different ecosystems: sand forest, grasslands, wetland and thorn scrub, providing outstanding birding opportunities and sightings of animals like nyala, bushbuck, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog and grey/red duiker. During your stay at Thornwood you can partake in self-guided or guided walking trails around the park or sign up for a variety of excursions offered around the area.

Special sub-tropical species are seen quite easily in the park and an added advantage over many other birding destinations in Zululand is the freedom that birders have, to walk safely along various trails within the reserve. The tranquil atmosphere of the park with limited vehicle traffic and secluded trails means that birds are relaxed and accommodating for photographers. The park has a record of over 300 bird species to date and we would love to challenge you to add to this list.

INFORMATION FOR BIRDERS:

Crested Guineafowl, Purple-crested Turaco, Green Malkoha, Broad-billed Roller, Bearded Scrub Robin, Rudd's and Yellow-breasted Apalis, Eastern Nicator, Gorgeous Bushshrike, Neergaard’s Sunbird, Grey Waxbill and Pink-throated Twinspot. With some luck one can also spot the elusive Narina Trogon and at night one can listen out for African Wood Owl. Summer migrants visiting during October to April include African Pygmy Kingfisher and African Emerald Cuckoo.
