Sunbird Cottage and Sunbird House are situated on the farm Glen Athol between Volksrust and Wakkerstroom, roughly 30km from each, just across the border into Northern Natal. We offer a chance to get away from it all on a working farm offering unsurpassed views of the surrounding mountains including the famous battlefields of Amajuba.
Sunbird Cottage and House sits on the gorge overlooking an indigenous forest that is home to a wonderful variety of animals and forest birds, we have over 200 species of birds and it is great for birders.
The Cottage has a deck and the House has a sunroom which opens onto the gorge from which you can watch amazing sunsets over Amajuba and the surrounding valley.
The cottage has 2 bedrooms and can sleep 4, it is fully equipped for self-catering and the lounge hosts a closed wood burning fireplace. The bathroom is a delight and one can enjoy a bath in the large oval tub while looking out into the forest. The kitchen and lounge are open plan and it is a shared bathroom, with a shower and bath. The main bedroom leads onto the deck, the 2nd bedroom has 2 single beds. The deck has a table and benches, a weber and there is a hammock for the deck as well.
The house is a large rambling farmhouse with lots of space and is self-catering and fully equipped. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 with double beds and 1 with 3 single beds and can sleep up to 10 people if you use the sleeper couch. There are two bathrooms, one en-suite. There is a large dining room, kitchen, lounge with a closed fireplace and a sunroom that opens onto the gorge. It has an extensive front lawn to relax on.
Linen and bath towels are provided but you need to bring your own Swimming towels if you plan to swim in the dams and tackle if you plan to fish. We do not service the units, if you want them serviced it can be arranged at an extra cost. Firewood is supplied for the fireplaces and braai but not charcoal. Please note the cottage and house do not have a TV and no WiFi but the cellphone signal is good for connectivity.

INFORMATION FOR BIRDERS:
We are situated next to a gorge with an indigenous forest and the bird life is abundant, there is also another indigenous forest at the back of the farm but you will you need 4x4 to access that area and it is great to get there as the sun rises and listen to the bird songs. This area offers you an opportunity to explore and rediscover old favorites and new ones. We are 30km from the Wakkerstroom Wetlands so a day trip is an easy drive.
