Had a great afternoon with Aunty Jenny Norman at Mondi Canal today. Plenty of birds, we arrived and Aunty Jenny quickly picked up an African Snipe on the edge of the water.
We then spent a bit of time scanning the area and managed to seen the juv. Greater Flamingos, Lots of Black-winged Stilts, Kittlitz's Plover ( one of which had two tiny chicks). A number of Migratory species have started appearing again such as Wood Sandpiper, Common Greenshank and Little Stint.
We were also very Lucky to pick up and off course Red-breasted Swallow in mixed feeding flocks of Little and African Palm Swifts, White-throated, Lesser-striped Swallows and Rock and Brown-throated Martins. Unfortunately it only came down to drink once and then quickly dissappeared.
To top the afternoon off we located the Lesser Moorhen (lifer) just before we were about to leave, it spend a bit of time feeding on the edge of the reeds before dissappearing.
We ended up with 54 species and full protocol card.
