INFORMATION FOR BIRDERS

Cuckoo's Nest Guesthouse in Limpopo stands out as the ultimate haven for birding enthusiasts. Nestled amidst the breathtaking natural beauty of the Limpopo region, this charming retreat offers an unrivaled opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of avian wonders. With its tranquil setting and lush gardens, the guesthouse attracts a diverse array of over 140 different bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. From the vibrant plumage of the African paradise flycatcher to the elusive call of the African Fish Eagle, the surrounding environment provides a captivating backdrop for birding adventures. Keep an eye out for special sightings of species such as the African cuckoo-hawk, several cuckoos, crested guineafowl, the gorgeous, olive and orange-breasted bushshrikes, and the yellow-fronted tinkerbirds. The Cuckoo’s Nest Guesthouse was founded and run by a couple of avid birders, hence the avian name, and the knowledgeable and passionate staff at Cuckoo's Nest are well-versed in the local birdlife. Grab a birding list from reception to tick off your sightings or sign up for a guided bird tour with a local guide. The guesthouse is conveniently close to the Kruger National Park, making it the ideal stopover for birders on their way to the Park via both the Pafuri and Punda Maria gates. It is also in the perfect location for day trips to both Blouberg Nature Reserve and Mapungubwe. Blouberg is home to the largest breeding colony of the Cape vulture in Southern Africa. If lucky, one might see a Rüppell’s vulture. The reserve has a new, water hole with a sunken hide for viewing birds and the diverse game. Blouberg is on the route of migrating birds which is in line with the Shashi river and the corridor between the Soutpansberg and Blouberg mountains. Mapungubwe is also suitable for a day trip and longer where an amazing variety of game and birding can be viewed. And then of course, for the really serious birders, there is a well-stocked wine cellar to come back to after a long day of birding.
